Others have suggested using externally described, but usually when I am
working with source files in an RPG program, the source file I refer to may
have record lengths of 92, 112, or 132 bytes. So I normally internally
describe the source file with a record length of 132, and specify USROPN. I
do an override to the file within the RPG program and then open it.

Subject: Accessing a source file.

Hi all,

I've been searching and searching but...

Can anybody supply the general rules for including, and reading, a source
physical file in an RPGLE program.?

I understand the requirements for the preceding CL override. It's the RPG
setup that's throwing me...
Can the file be defined as 'E'xternal or does it have to be 'F'ixed with 'I'
specs? (I haven't used 'I' specs in so long...)
Do I have to rename the record format? (since it's the same as the file name
and the compiler doesn't like that!)

Thanks for your time and assistance,
"The Captain"
