There are several ways (data queue, message queue, break message, socket,
others?)  The major issue tends to be 'why' rather than 'how.'  If you're
trying to send a status bar (10% of records processed, 20%, etc.) you will
need to have a way to synchronise the batch and interactive processes.  If
you're trying to let a user know that it's OK to proceed to the next step in
a menu, then a break message may be all you need.

Can you share the actual business problem with the list?  Perhaps we could
make some suggestions that would help your particular situation.
