I'd be inclined to create several logicals that provide what you need
depending on the criteria, and be sure to include select stmt's in the LF to
get only what that criteria needs, then see how that performs against the
combined ( join?).

It depends... do you need the data of the other files for each record in
the
master file, of does it depend on certain criteria ? Sometimes manually
CHAINing the record is much faster than a JOIN, sometimes it isn't.
