OK, I'm almost there, Jon, but the last two sentences threw me.  Let me be
sure I understand what you are saying.

So, even though I never actually allocated any storage in the calling
program, I could still set the occurrence to different records once I've set
the basing pointer to equal the pointer returned from the I/O module?  I
guess that's the point I was missing.  I thought I needed to allocate
something in the calling program just so I could move around in the calling
program's version of the MODS from one occurrence to another.

I would presume, then, that since the calling program's MODS was defined at
the maximum, that, if not careful, I could actually set the occurrence to a
higher value than what the I/O module had currently allocated and it would
still work, although it would be referencing unknown contiguous data?
