This is the method we have decided to use.  Unfortunately, it's just a
cosmetic patch over this particular field's problem.  Ours is a
number-of-items field in an order entry screen and 1000001 items on the
order does kinda stick out.

Every other numeric field will still have the same problem.  What we need is
some method to lock a cursor in the field once the first character has been
entered into it, so that the field exit keywords could control or at least
display a keyboard error.  If you enter the first number in a numeric field
now, the Enter Key becomes disabled (You get a keyboard error and the cursor
stays where it is. ).  What controls that?  The error occurs before the
Enter is returned to the user program, so it must be workstation data
management.  That's the same action we need to have occur on the Tab and
Arrow keys.  Is there a "technical" reason why workstation data management
couldn't recognize those keys too, and apply the same logic?
