Here's the template:

template< typename From, typename To > To stream_convert( From& from )
     {
      std::stringstream stream;
      stream << from;
      To to;
      stream >> to;
      return to;
     }

Here's it being used (in this case, int to string)

     std::string tmpString = "New connection from ";
     tmpString += inet_ntoa(remoteaddr.sin_addr);
     tmpString += " on socket ";
     tmpString += stream_convert<int, std::string>( (int &) newfd );
