I agree with you, it would be nice to have support for IFS source
files.
I spend more time than I would like striping out date and sequence
information. V5R1 does not alleviate this. I did create a command
exit that allows you to specify phantom parameters like:

crtrpgmod srcstmf('/dmmorris/qrpglesrc/mymbr.irp)')

There are some limitations, but it works well enough. I plan on making

it available when I get some time.

Better would be to make the compiler use those wishy-washy IFS files
as
source code so you could get rid of the retarded single level store
and
have a rich file hierarchy that would facilitate good source
management.
And you would break free of the stupid record length requirements for
source code.

Maybe this has been done in V5?
