yeah, but this call is input to and returned from. It is used by and can be
modified by the subprocedure. Otherwise, yes, it could be done that way. And
yes, I know that I can also force it to return a separate variable and use a
function call on assignment. Again, I'm just mucking up the code to get
around something the compiler does *TO* me.

but I can also put the silly D spec in.
