One alternative that is already available is to use %status() and check for a
zero (or non-zero) condition.  Then it works regardless of whether you used
CHAIN or a READxx variant.

Using Joe's example, it looks like:

        Chain
        Dow     %status( file )  = *Zero
        (process)
        Reade
        Enddo

Of course, %status() can be non-zero for reasons other than just a record not
found condition.  A record lock is a common example.

It depends on what you are trying to do...
