Andrew,

I came across wrong...

Bought Paul Conte's (and Mike Cravitz' maybe?)
pretty-much-everything-you-need-to-know-about SQL book... I've been MEANING
to read it... (excuses, excuses, yada, yada...)

Sometimes I react, rather than act... IOW, I react AGAINST this idea that
SQL is the ONLY way to go (being as OS/400 developers are putting functions
ONLY in SQL, just to force me to use it). I'm not against SQL, so much as
I'm against the idea it's the only way to go.

|
| Sure no prob. However after playing with SQL for a little bit... I will
| use them when I can - esp. since the code in my Net.Data macros is
| EXACTLY the same in my RPG now - and LOTSA RPG code can be replaced with
| SQL built in functions... I rather like the embedded SQL - & it avoids
| things like level checks when the files change... things like soundex
| lookups can be a dream in SQL 'cause it's built in.
|
| Honestly - it's just another tool in the toolbox that's all - the best
| way to complete a project (as long as it adheres to standards!) is the
| quickest.

| Sorry, Andrew...
|
| I don't have time to get in a long "SQL vs. DDS Wars" thread.. but I
| beg to
| differ...
|
| ESPECIALLY in this particular case, where all that's needed to solve the
| problem is a half-line of code. (In a language that most everybody
| knows
| already.)

| |
| | Actually - SQL/400 is a neat way around this - no DDS - no specs -
| just
| | create the Datastructure you want, and perform the selection using the
| | SQL embedded in the RPG, then put the results into your fields...
| quite
| | elegant!

| | | I'm trying to use a Query/400 outfile as input into an RPGIV
| program.
| | I
| | | have the file as input and externally defined.
| | | The error message is RNF2121 saying the record format is already
| | defined.
| | | How do I get around this without copying the query outfile to a DDS
| | file
| | | and using this newly created file?
