I would do a simply Move into the numeric field.

Am I trying to do something that isn't do-able in free-format RPG?

I have a four character year parameter (being passed from an old PL/I
program) into my new RPGLE program. I want to move it to a four numeric
field for manipulation. What is the best way to do this?

Thanks!
