RPG & Subfile Control Record Question ...

I have a subfile control record and when someone presses a command key I want
it to calculate something for me while displaying "CALCULATING" in a reversed
image box on the screen.

Here's what I'm doing ...

SETON indicator for "CALCULATING" to display
WRITE subfile control record (should display at this point)
DO LOOP

The above does not display the box...

But, if I subsitute the WRITE with an EXFMT on the subfile control record it
does display the "CALCULATING" in reversed image.

Does anyone know why?  Obviously I do not want to use the EXFMT because it
means the user will have to press another key... I just want it to display
and when the loop in done disapear.
