Andy, the only way to test if a field is null is to use %nullind.

The actual value of the field _might_ be *Loval, (I think the DFT
keyword controls the "value" contained in a null field).  But you
shouldn't compare the field to Loval, or use TEST on it, or use the
value in any way, until you've checked whether or not it's null.
