Well, one other thing you need to consider. We may have no choice
of learning ILE if we are maintaining programs that we don't write.

Vendor applications, while currently written in RPG III are starting
to see more IV code from what I've seen. And soon ILE code may
crop in with newer versions. If we don't know ILE how are we going
to maintain these programs?

And even if we are in a secluded shop where the only code we ever
see is what we write, can you guarantee yourself that you won't be
working at another company sometime down the road that uses ILE code?

While it is true that a lot of ILE benefits are esoteric, some of
the benefits are not but are real, just not easily defined to someone
who doesn't know what ILE can do.

It is like trying to explain the benefits of OOPs programming to
someone who doesn't know OOPs, some are never going to get it, until
they learn OOPs and start using it.

Now, the question is, when is it appropriate to use ILE and when isn't
it appropriate? If your shop decides to go the ILE route I would say
it would be appropriate for all programs. To code in the ILE style,
program interfaces, etc... That way your programs are coded the same
and not in a myriad of formats.
