Rob, you don't.  That is what makes e-mail work.  It is universal across all platforms and languages.  

It actually allows people to communicate.  As soon as one starts adding complications like bolding and underlining the whole thing begins to unravel.  Microsoft messed with the "curly quote" and that caused havoc everywhere.  Hopefully Microsoft has learned their lesson but I really doubt it judging by their breakthrough developments in the auto-virus forwarding field and their intra-brand incompatibility layering.

Nooooooooo!!!!!!!!  :)

You are correct - that would be *very* unpopular with some email readers,
and I don't just mean MUAs.  Most email I receive in HTML goes straight to
the great email graveyard :)
