Ahhh, e-mail?  You don't use characters.

Time for you to read up on HTML formatting.

But, be advised, not everyone appreciates receiving HTML formatted text
in their e-mail, especially if they are on a Linux box which doesn't do
HTML formatting in the text mail program.

You want to cheat?  Create an e-mail in your PC e-mail program (Netscape
is my choice) with the formatting you want (Bold, underline, etc...) and
then send it to yourself.  When you receive it, view source.  There's the
stuff you'd have to send to get it formatted.
