GZip has been ported to the AS/400 so you may be able to use that.
http://www.gzip.org/

You'd still have to copy the file to the IFS first, then gzip it.  There's
PC versions of GUnzip or things like WinZip recognise it.

My problem is that the system support of our AS400 is in another continent,
and will not allow the instillation of anything Java related onto the
machine.
