The bell has been tolling for the demise of RPG/IBM since I started coding
in 1975 and here I am, still working for a company who has spent a lot of
money with IBM but also received a lot of good from IBM products and
services. As I look back, I remember an article that was published in one
of the computer rags in the 70's which listed the top 25 computer companies
of the time and which ones would be around in 2000. Some of the ones that
where listed were DEC, Burroughs, Sperry Rand, Wang, IBM, HP, Compaq, etc.

My crystal ball was a little hazy when the System/38 was announced and we
looked at DEC, Burroughs and Wang as replacements for our S/3. I sure am
glad I stuck with IBM and it has served me well in 4 different
companies/jobs. IBM has always provided a decent migration path. We didn't
have a path from the 1130 to the S/3 or a well defined path from the S/3 to
the S/34 but the rest have been a breeze.
I didn't learn ADA, Pascal, PL/I, Smalltalk, I did learn HTML, C,C++,VB, I
haven't learned JAVA, I don't use HTML, C, C++, VB but I still use RPG.
