The problem is, it doesn't work with all FTP clients. I don't know which
do and which don't, but I do know that at the very least, there are
quite popular clients that don't work.

I think it's safe to say that what works for one environment is quite
likely to not work for many more. This is one case of that. I strongly
advise not to buck the odds and stick with things more likely to work
A-Z and 0-9. Special characters just seem to introduce special problems.
