You can get to the information with the lstat()
function.  I do it to delete stmf objects that are
older than x days.  

I open the directory, do the lstat on each object,
test it's type (ie *STMF), test the date, and if it's
old enough I unlink() it.

(I'm not at my 400 or I'd post the code.)
