Couldn't you use the Virtual Terminal APIs to avoid worrying this and allow
the program to run in batch without any physical device?

The topic of virtual terminal APIs has been covered on the list before
(check the archives at www.midrange.com) and I'm sure I've also seen it at
www.ignite400.org lists as well.
