That is the way MOVE is supposed to work - it preserves the bit pattern of
the number exactly.  Others will no doubt mention using RPG IV - look at
%trim as well as %editc.  The reason I add my post is the remark about
avoiding CAT/SUBST/CHECK.  Why eliminate them from the solution of your
problem?  Did you try to use them and find a problem?
