You were keen  :)  I was aware of how the va_ macros work but I wouldn't bother 
with 
building a pointer to such a structure -- partly because there is no guarantee 
that the 
storage used by the va_ macros will always work that way -- but mostly because 
it is 
easier to do the concatenation in RPG and just work with strings.  I see both 
Hans and 
Barbara suggest this approach.

I ended up prototyping it as a large-ish number of optional parameters of 
string pointers 
with a goodly block of comments explaining how to invoke it from RPG by 
converting RPGs 
types to char first.

The only use I can see for printf() from RPG is to implement a tracing function 
for 
server-type code.  It is simpler than creating a printer file and handling the 
I/O and 
more flexible than O-specs.
