I believe you can avoid the "adding a character" approach by using the
TRIM option if you've got an AS/400 running V4R4 or better.  I don't know
the details, however, since I'm a V3R2 type of guy (for now, anyway)

For older systems (like mine) the workaround to avoid spaces being trimmed
from the end of th records is to put the file in the IFS (you can either
write it there directly with your RPG IV program, or use a tool like
CPYTOSTMF to get it there) and then FTP that file.
