I could do that, but the nature of the data is such that it would be highly inefficient.  It's EDI data, with an unknown number of record types in an unknown number of members.  The format of the data depends on who the data comes from (each vendor will send us the data structured in a format easiest for them, and still "matching" the standard).  Strings mostly.

 

Another drawback to building a logical is that the data is maintained by programs over which I have no control, or source code.  I do not know what would happen if I were to build a logical(s) over the file, and leave the logical on disk.  Of course, I could just re-create it whenever I needed but who wants to do that?

 

Besides, I'd just like to know how to use the SQL 'ALIAS' with a variable member name.
