Excellent suggestion Simon!  Having them send the character to determine the 
hex value.

Hello John,

The inverted question mark is an invariant character.  Standard ASCII shows 
that 
character as X'a8', ISO Latin1 shows it as x'bf', EBCDIC code page 37 shows it 
as x'ab'. 

You may also be able to transfer a file from the target system which contains 
an inverted 
question mark and see what character it gets translated to.  Then use that 
character in 
your program.

Be aware that this solution is not NLS enabled and will only work in limited 
codepages.
