Check the Defer Write (DFRWRT) option on the CRTDSPF command.  I believe the 
default is *YES which means any screen writes are buffered and not actually 
written to the display until a read request is issued for the display.  *NO 
for this option means any screen writes will be issued immediately to the 
display and the program regains control after the write I/O has finished.
