Well ... I make my programs in a homebuild precompiler for
RPG400. Numeric fields come as alphanumeric input and are
automatically converted to numeric with correct decimal position.
I have a lot of help in building new programs with the precompiler.
For example, automatic position the cursor on the field which
course the error. A macro-function which make many common
tasks very simple. Like:
  Numeric editing
  Date check and aritmetric
  Compute check-digit
  and so on
A number of simplified commands, like:
  ONCE ... END
  IFCHANGE ... END
DIVI (ignore div by zero, result in that case is zero)
MLINE (move whole next line to a field)
Simplified inline error message with field-data
  and so on

I hope to some day get time to rebuild the precompiler for
RPG IV. And I am waiting for the free format calculation
commands in next version of RPG.
