Is this really true?  Is the AS/400 a marginal piece for IBM or is the 
AS/400 a true cash machine?  My understanding from sources I consider 
reliable is that the mid-range machines beginning with the Sys/3 through 
the Sys/38, Sys/36, and AS/400 have survived every assassination attempt 
by IBM's mainframe people because the  mid-range machines have generated 
tons and tons of cash year in and year out.

IBM will not invest those same resources in the AS/400 because the
potential return is low and the potential for return is even lower.
