A good point, and I bring my own laptop with both Ethernet and token ring 
cards -- BUT, nobody wants to _HIRE_ a contractor with even _THAT_ much gear. 
 Try hiring someone with _EVERYTHING_, like you suggest, and see how well you 
can afford them.  Every shop is different, thus the tools are different.  
You're talking thousands of possible client side solutions here!  If 
companies won't pay for someone with a laptop and two LAN adapters, how are 
they going to hire someone with every possible combination of software at 
$1,000 a pop?
