RPG II = S36 RPG
RPG III = RPG
RPG IV = RPG/400 = RPGILE

(According to the title of AS/400 RPG/400 Programmer's Guide).

There have been discussions on this before.

Lot of changes from RPG II to RPG III, biggest being externally described files.
External Display files handled a bit differently. F specs changed around a bit.

Even more changes from RPG III to RPG IV, New op codes, biggest one being
free format expressions with the Eval op code. Much longer varaible names.
Much longer file names. New BIFs (Built in Functions) such as %Found,
%EOF and such. New Function Prototypes, etc..

RPG ILE is included in RPG IV, but you do not have to use it if you do not
want to. ILE lets you build objects that contain compiled source and use them
at run time.

RPG ILE and RPG II look like two totally different langagues.

Jim Langston
