The DSM api's were introduced around the beginning of 1992 or so, as I
recall.  Definitely by summer of '92.  But they need to be called from
an ILE program.  At the time, I think only the C compiler was
available for ILE.

I don't remember offhand when V3R1 came out, giving us ILE for RPG as
well.

Yes, they can (could) do what you wanted.  Prior to DSM, this was
doable by using a DDS format with the USRDFN keyword, often referred
to as UDDS.  This was available even at V1R1 (and the S/38 too).

I think DSM is a much better way to go then UDDS.  It encapsulates
much of the complexity.
