Back in 1981 I was working for IBM Australia. I programmed the Series 1. It wa
completely different from the S/3x line of computers. It had its own OS &
Programming Language (APL? - Advanced Programming Language?).

We were using the Series/1 as front ends on the first computerisation of
Telephone Directory assistance. A bunch of Series 1's would talk to a System/7,
which would then access a 4341 which was acting as a File Server. The Series/1
were still current then, until about 1985 I think. The System 7 were actually
obsolete when the project started, but the software that was used required a
System/7, so IBM mad a few extras specially for us.

The Series 1 was a terrific machine for process control, but no so good for data
entry/retrieval. Little known fact that the computers on the first Space
Shuttles (1981) were Series 1's!!!!

The series 1 was a real 'Meccano Set' (do you have those in US?). If you wanted
more disk, just buy it and attach. No limits (not that I was told of, anyway).
You could build these things up and out. They came in racks about 6' high. You
just kept adding racks.
