That's what I did in my program that processes many record types from a
single file.  The first 2 bytes of the record are the string type.  They
tell me which data structure I should use with the EVAL stmt.

In the old days we just coded everything in the I-specs using record
identifying indicators.  The external data structures give the advantage of
data independence and code re-use.
