I thought that ILE RPG already had this using the "name..." convention. At
least, I am using it.

Are us talking about built in functions because functions are already
available to read and write to IFS file system? I have written them and so
have many others.

Could you give an example of these?

In no particular order...

Here are the things I think RPG IV needs to become a fully
"grown-up" language:
- scoped names within data structures so you can have subfield A in
  two different data structures
- unlimited-length character variables (or at least no arbitrary
  RPG limit)
- n-dimension arrays
- variable-type in prototyped parameters
- bitwise operations for integer and character data
- typed pointers with a dereference operator

AS/400 related things that ILE RPG should have:
- full null-value support
- access to the IFS file system
- library-qualified data-areas and variable-named data-areas
