Tunde,

To me the use of the term dynamic in SQL is somewhat confusing. To
me truly dynamic SQL uses an SQL statement that is not known when a
program is compiled -and- an SQLDA to determine where data that is
retrieved is placed when it is fetched into a program.

The manuals usually refer to programs that use a variable SQL statement
as dynamic SQL. This type of SQL requires the use of the PREPARE
statement. This is not really very dynamic because you must define the
possible output column formats prior to compilation.

The second type is possible in RPGIV but not RPGIII because you
must tell SQL where to place data by setting a pointer that is stored in
the SQLDA. The pointer points to the location that SQL will read a
column into. Basing pointers are not supported in RPGIII but are
supported in RPGIV.

Hi all,

I am doing a SQL/400 CBT course, the course mentions that they are two
types of dynamic SQL programs.
Fixed List (for Cobol, RPG, C, PL/1 and FORTRAN),
Varying List (for Cobol, C, and PL/1).

Just to be sure, does this mean that you cannot use varying list dynamic
SQL programs in RPGIV.

Thanks

Tunde
