Thank you all for your responses.
I would like to comment on the statements about using embedded SQL.
I agree that this could be a solution for fields used within a single
program/module etc...
Our particular application requires that these null capable fields be parameters
in functions/procedures contained in a service program.
I do not know how embedded SQL will assist me in defining parameters on a
procedure prototype as null capable.
Then having the ability to pass that variable to the procedure/function still
containing the null value within the function/procedure.
