I think your average programmer would delight in pronouncing it "sub-ditz".

     I would drop the 'Z' - I know it's more semantically correct, but 
     $subdt() looks cleaner to me, and looks more related to %subst.
     
     I could see myself saying to a colleague, "use the 'subdate' BIF", but 
     wouldn't have a clue how to pronounce %subdtz()!!
