Actually, the GPL explicitly states that a GPLed program may be sold for
profit.  You just have to make the source code for the program available
to the users.

Licenses like the GPL and the BSD license are really better for programs
or libraries.  Code snippets should probably just be made public domain.
Choosing a license for you programs is a process that I'm not going to go
into here (It would take too long), but if you don't like the provisions
of the GPL yet want your programs to be free (freedom-wise--you can still
charge for them), look at a variant of the BSD license.  That license
basically allows anyone to take and relicense the code to their own
purposes.
