Depending on the particular application, it might be quite reasonable to
turn off the null indicator and load the value for every field that is
not-null, and to turn on the null indicator and load default values for
every field that is null.  I think that the default setting for the null
indicator is NOT NULL, and that it stays that way until it gets turned on.
As you have discovered, the null indicator is just another attribute of the
field, like datatype, length and value.
