John,

the only instance I know of is when the "one long field" is named

file= Input, record = inrec, field = infield

DATADS DS
                             1 250 infield
                             1 50 Name
                           51 100 address
                         101 250 get the drift?

The work is in correctly identifying the field positions for the
data.

Hi All

When reading through a keyed file which contains one long char field
(200A), is it possible to define a DS in such a way that when a
read/chain/reade . . . is performed on the file the DS subfields are
implicitly updated ? Currently, I simply move the field into the DS and was
wondering if there was a way to implicitly do this (call me lazy).

Regards
John.
