Yes and No
I used to use this all the time on the Sys/38 with Mapics files, (into MY
naming conventions)  
 BUT the file has to be  program described, I believe,  not externally
described.
BTW,   With a program described file you can WRITE thru a D/S (name in
Result field) too.
