David, I have not literally done that, but the way I've accomplished the
task is do define seperate fields, the number of fields matching the
greatest length of your "variable size" field and condition each one with an
indicator. Say for max length 35 field1 defined as 1 field2 defined as
2...Field35 as 35.  So in the RPG when the length is 1 it goes into field1
and  activate thae corresponding indicator. As each record of the SF
displayes only the field with the indicator on displays. Hope that helps,
