If I understand the problem, you would like to assign numbers
automatically... 1,2,3, etc. Is this correct? You could use a control
file. Here is one I am currently using to assign numbers. It's not
high-tech and this is not a heavy load program.:
 R SRQN                 
   REQN           5  0  
   INCR1          4  0  
 K REQN                 
Use your program to increment Incr1 and move the value into Reqn and use
the value in Reqn for any updates.
