Usual suspects: Update the wireless router's firmware if available; ditto
the WiFi adapter's driver in the PC.

Of course each device in the chain will add some overhead but it does seem
excessive to drop what, 40-ish %, by passing through the router.

Agree with Booth that you might look at the age, or at least the supported
speeds/standards, of the router. And your Internet connection; what speed
are you paying for?

Also, what are you using to test? I've been using speedtest.net lately. I'm
paying Comcast for 75MB down & just tested (wired) 90Mbps down / 12.1Mbps
up. Same speed over WiFi. Wired is through a Gb switch into a D-Link 855
router; WiFi is through a Ubiquiti UniFi AC AP Pro WAP into the D-Link.

I guess I was asking, in a sideways way, how old is your router? Is
there a leapfrog in router technology that you are missing?

They may be true but it doesn't explain why I'm so much slower with the
router than without.
