I have been experiencing something just really weird. I keep track of
articles, tips, etc., for future reference by copying them to a Word
document and logging them to an Excel spreadsheet.

I noticed the other day that certain characters in *some* of the documents
had been changed. Specifically the apostrophe (') was changed to Æ and
dashes (-) were changed to û. (The dash, by the way, only got changed if
there was a space before it, not as far as I have been able to find, in a
hyphenated word.) For example, the spreadsheet might have a row for
"Article - Part 1" with a hyperlink of the same name, which was the way that
I originally saved and logged it. But now the document in the folder is
"Article û Part 1"; the spreadsheet row, of course, remains the same,
including the hyperlink.

I thought I had found and fixed all of the documents in the folder
yesterday, but went back to check this morning. Naturally, I missed a few,
though there were a couple that I thought I had changed yesterday - but that
might just be old age.

Anyway, I figured a quick way to check was to search the spreadsheet for
entries with ' and - and, then, to see if the hyperlink worked.
Occasionally, I get a dialog box that says: Cannot open the specified file.
So in Windows Explorer I find the file. But, Lo and Behold, the file name
on disk is correct! I.e., it matches the hyperlink. If I merely select the
file in Explorer (don't make any changes or open it), then the hyperlink
works!

The original folder, if it means anything, is on my home PC. Every weekend,
after adding anything new, I copy it to a thumbnail drive for use at work.
Both PCs are running XP at SP3.

Anyone have a clue what is going on or questions that I need to answer?

Thanks.
