Kindle's e-ink display is very different form an LCD/LED screen. For one,
it draws no power unless the image needs to change. For another, the image
does not wash out under sunlight.

For battery life, it's not always about how many hours straight you can
read. There's also the issue of what you need to take with you when
traveling. If you can get 10 days of normal use out of it, and this (
http://discuss.gdgt.com/amazon/kindle/2/general/battery-life-for-kindle-2/ )
discussion (from before they improved the battery life) suggests that's
easy, for a week-long trip you don't need to pack charging cables or have
yet another thing to plug in at night. So there's less to bring, less to
lose, and less to have to do. Not to mention reducing energy consumption in
general is a good thing, even if only by a few watts here & there. Over the
product run of hundreds of thousands of devices, the energy conserved is
significant.

I have had my iPod Touch for a couple years now and haven't had any

you
know, I listen to about 40 hours of podcasts a week. I am syncing my Touch
multiple times a day. It gets used heavily.

HDMI, I believe is available though an add-on.

Rumors are starting to appear (more seriously) about multitasking coming.
These Apple rumors don't just come out of thin air. They are usually based
on something. Heck the iPad has been coming out for 7 years before it came
out.

I did initially question about the eyestrain, but a good eBook reader app
allows you to make the background black and the text white. It doesn't seem
to strain my eyes as bad as if it were a white screen. I have never
seen/used a Kindle, but I hear that eye strain is a non-issue for it. For
battery life, think about this, how many hours straight would you be
reading
a book? I doubt it would be much more than 10 hours in a row. I plug my
iPod
Touch in every night, it isn't that hard to do. I have also heard the two
weeks for the Kindle is only if you don't use it. The more you read, the
quicker the battery drains.

I will be seriously looking at it when I can justify buying a netbook. I
wanted a netbook for sitting in front of the TV and for over-night
ventures.
This could take place of that. I don't really NEED a laptop if I had
something like that. Heck, I even have a 5250 emulator on my iPod Touch
now.
I could works on the road! :-) NOT!

It would be fun to have one but it still seems a little expensive to me.
My biggest beef is that it doesn't have a hard drive. Flash memory would
be OK if you could replace it yourself. When you consider that it
doesn't
multitask, have a camera or hdmi output, it gets a little harder to
justify the expense. I haven't heard if you can replace the battery
yourself but I would be surprised if you can. I can browse the web in
front of the TV just fine with my laptop. I do love my 5th gen iPod for
mobile music, podcasts, and video. If I read a lot of e-books it looks
like it could be more versatile than a Kindle ...but I don't read
e-books.

Having said all of that, I wouldn't mind having one as a toy if I could
get it for netbook prices but then Apple does have a habit of charging a
premium for its products.
