Regarding XP mode: I was told it requires a separate XP license to run XP
mode. That it essentially runs XP as a virtual. Is that right?

Yes. If you receive both recovery CDs, the license grants you the
ability to use either one at a time. If you receive only one bitness,
you only have the rights to use the bitness you've received. If you
purchase software assurance for this license, you are free to choose
the bitness at wim, no matter what was delivered. software assurance
also grants you the rights to use Windows 7 Enterprise, which includes
BitLocker - a very good idea on mobile laptop.
I know if you buy Win7 retail you can load either 32-bit or 64-bit.
Only the boxed and upgrade versions ship with both. The SBE versions do
not.
Our sales reps main app is 16-bit. The vendor says it will run on Win7
32-bit, not 64-bit (they're working on a new version).
Use Windows 7 x64 and run the sales apps through Windows XP Mode.
