I'm using Mozilla Thunderbird. You do need to sort using the "tree" column - left most - then use the asterisk to open all the threads.

FWIW, this doesn't seem to fully work when using NNTP to access the list via Thunderbird. Subject changes still cause threading havoc for me. The worst are those that have really long subjects. I'm not sure which mail client(s) does it, but something seems to mangle subjects longer than 100 characters or so.
