That's what I did and it worked fine but it still has problems when I try to re-run the Windows Update.

You can reinstall "on top" of the existing installation I believe and XP will keep the settings and programs etc. It is a last resort however, but still better than the next step - reinstalling XP.

For those who have a choice I have been extremely happy with the built in backup facility on my Mac.
